Lead By Example
Children learn the most about the world and how to deal with it by watching the people around them. If you want your child to grow up to be a responsible, caring adult, you must be a responsible, caring adult. Positive Reinforcement
If you see your child doing something that you would like him to keep doing, such as helping to clean your Guelph real estate, reward him to encourage him to do it again. Rewards can be as simple as saying "Good job!" or as complex as earning a new privilege like being able to ride their bikes to a friend's. They shouldn't consist of food or toys, because then you're edging over the line into bribery and possibly damaging the child's health (in the case of food rewards).

By the same token, when you see your child doing something you do not want her to do, you must punish her. The first offence should be met with an explanation of why she must not do this and what will happen if she does it again. For example: "Don't climb the ladders in Toronto lofts or you may fall and get hurt. If you do it again you may not watch TV tonight." If the child re-offends, carry through with your threat of punishment. Punishments should never consist of withholding food or hitting. Time outs (being made to sit out of activities) and suspension of privileges (such as TV) are very effective.
